The Heavenly Gardener

The Lord will keep you from all harm—he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore. Psalm 121:7-8

An avid gardener thinks about gardening practically all of the time. This is especially true throughout the growing season. With the garden gloriously in bloom and with produce starting to hang heavily on vines and branches, tending the garden is an almost constant consideration.

This can involve a certain amount of both agony and ecstasy. That is why just thinking about going on a trip to visit family recently proved to be both a delight as well as somewhat worrisome. Who would watch over the garden? Who would pick the produce? Who would water the plants? Going away for a few days seemed to be almost like dropping the ball or sleeping on the job.

This consideration prompts me to be all the more amazed with the reliability and continual care of our Lord, the heavenly gardener. The Lord God of the universe, the divine creator and protector of everything on earth and in heaven, constantly watches over all of creation without taking a break. The Lord does not fall asleep on the job, and as the Psalmist suggests, protects us from all harm all of the time. The one who watches over all the aspects of life in his garden does not go on vacation. It’s not that God is against vacations. He knows we will benefit from time away to rest, rejoice, and rejuvenate in the wonders of life in his world. But since he is God, he himself doesn’t actually need a vacation, even though Genesis tells us that God indeed rested on the 7th day following the creation of the world and all that exists.

As I was thinking about these things, one of the songs from a recent worship service came to mind. The 2nd and 4th stanzas of #381, “Savior, Like a Shepherd Lead Us,” go as follows: “We are thine, thou dost befriend us, be the guardian of our way; keep thy flock, from sin defend us, seek us when we go astray. Blessed Jesus, Blessed Jesus! Hear, O hear us when we pray.”

“Early let us seek thy favor, early let us do thy will; blessed Lord and only Savior, with thy love our bosoms fill. Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus! Thou hast loved us, love us still.”

Those are marvelously reassuring thoughts and prayers. I hope the Lord of the universe will give or has given you some time off to rest and be refreshed and maybe even to see and enjoy other places. May you find peace of heart and mind as you reflect on how completely God watches over and cares for you.

Let us all give thanks to the Lord, the “Heavenly Gardener” for watching over us and all things in all of creation. May we be nurtured and restored with the rest and refreshment that God alone provides. We commit this all to the Lord Jesus Christ, who loves, sustains, and cares for us all of the time. Amen.
