Mature Driver Safety Course Registration

The number of people in the United States age 50 and older has grown significantly in the past decade; and this segment of the population will continue to increase more rapidly than with all other age groups. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that by 2030, one in every four drivers will be 65 or older. This means that there will be more than 30 million older drivers on our roads at that time.

Statistics show that overall older adults are safe drivers with good driving records. However, certain medications, medical conditions, and age-related changes in physical and mental function can increase the risks of crashes and injury among our older drivers. Therefore, it is critically important that these older drivers make safety a personal priority. The AARP Driver Safety Program is committed to helping Americans 50 and older sustain mobility and independence as they age.

The AARP Driver Safety Program covers defensive driving techniques and the normal changes in vision, hearing, and reaction time associated with aging. This course also provides practical techniques for adjusting to these changes to help ensure the driver's own safety and that of others on the road. Participants learn about current rules of the the road and how to operate their vehicles more safely in the increasingly challenging driving environment of today. Topics include:

Maintaining proper following distance and minimizing the effect of blind spots. Methods of changing lanes and turning at dangerous intersections. Maintaining physical flexibility and possible effects of medications on driving. Limiting driver distractions such as eating, smoking, and cell phone use. Monitoring the driving skills and capabilities of oneself and others. Proper use of safety equipment such as anti-lock brakes, air bags and seat belts.

This September at Leola UMC the Reverend Arthur Rettew once again will be our instructor for a regular 2 session – 8 hour “Full Course,” as well as an abbreviated 4 hour refresher course. The “Refresher Course,” for those who have completed a previous course within the past 3-4 years, will be held on Thursday, September 28, from 1PM to 5PM. The regular course of two 4hr. sessions will take place on Monday and Tuesday, September 25-26, 2017. All sessions are from 1-5 PM.

To attend either of these driver safety courses, please submit your name along with a $15.00 prepaid course fee for AARP members ($20 for non-AARP members) to get your name on a list of prospective participants. Classes average around 20 members, and will be limited to the low 30's. To be sure of your inclusion for either of these courses this fall will require registration through Leola UM Church with the necessary fee. Please note that (Checks are to be made payable to “Leola UM Church”).
